Gross Reservoir Expansion Project

Recreation During Construction

Directions to Gross Reservoir:

From the Denver metro area:

  • Take Highway 93 north from Golden to Highway 72.
  • Turn left (west) on Highway 72 toward Pinecliffe to County Road 77/Gross Dam Road. The intersection has the CCCIA Hall and United Power offices. If you have passed Last Stand Tavern on the left or the fire station on the right you have gone too far.
  • Gross Dam Road will take you to both the north and south access points.

From Boulder:

  • Take Flagstaff Road west until it turns into eastern Gross Dam Road.

We recognize that Gross Reservoir is a popular recreation area and over the years have talked with many visitors and recreators at Gross Reservoir. The most frequently asked questions about recreation and potential changes during the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project have been compiled into an easy to read FAQ document.

Although final project design continues, we anticipate that recreation along the reservoir’s north shore, including boating access, will continue throughout construction. For public safety considerations, recreation in other areas – particularly near the dam and in the vicinity of the quarry – will be curtailed during construction.  Denver Water is in the process of developing a temporary recreation management plan detailing recreation closures and limitation during construction activities.  At the end of construction, recreation opportunities will be similar to what currently exist at Gross Reservoir. Recreation access during the 2021 boating season does not have anticipated GRE Project impacts for users.
